A valuable compound present in black pepper is piperine - an organic chemical compound classified as an alkaloid. This is the substance that is responsible for the characteristic pungent taste of pepper. Since the compound has a number of valuable properties, the black pepper extract used in OstroVit is standardized to 95% piperine.
